- appear in local business listings.
- attract your clients in the areas surrounding your business.
When a web searcher searches for a specific business or service in a location, it triggers Google geographical display and a list of businesses that provide that service or product within that local area is displayed alongside other related results in the search results.
Why Is Location or Geographical Based Marketing/ Local SEO Important For Companies?
Smartphones and location based services help people find your business. Think about this example for some seconds.
What if a mother is looking for a school to enroll her child. Specifically a school that makes use of the Cambridge curriculum alongside the Nigerian National Curriculum. She pulls out her smartphone, turn to Google and searches “best Cambridge secondary school in Amuwo Odofin”.
She sees a map of all the nearby secondary schools in Google Maps, and Google My Business. She goes through the reviews to see what people are saying about the school before she clicks away to the school’s website to learn more about its operandi. She makes her decision based on all these.
Would your business be part of that decision? If you don’t have a location based marketing plan, then probably not and if they can’t find you, they can’t patronize or buy from you.
Hope you know that more people are turning to their smartphones to find the products and services they need.
Take a look at these numbers:
- One out of every four Nigerians owns a smartphone.
- More than 10 million people have accessed the internet from their phone last year (eMarketer)
- By 2021, more than 80 million people will be accessing the internet from their phone (eMarketer)
Here’s the most interesting statistic, Google is reporting more than 30 percent of all mobile internet searches are “local searches.”
See what a local SEO search for a “grocery store near me” looks like:
